CITY MAY GET INVOLVED IN NYC CRANE LICENSING

On April 9, 2011 the NY Times Saturday edition wrote an article about the Operating Engineers Local #14 and #15.

City May Play Role in Labor Fight Between Crane Workers and Developers - April 8, 2011

A few notes about the article:

  1. Local 40 Business Manager’s comments at the end of the story;
  2. Unidentified Local #14 member comment explains the attitude of rank and file members towards contractors;
  3. Nowhere does the BCTC go after REBNY as it has the BTEA.

The subway campaign had ended.  There are no more ads, but the website remains active.  To date over 42,000 visit have been recorded.

The BTEA will not initiate any further press stories.  We will respond publicly to any and all press inquiries when called - and we know some are coming.

PILOT PROGRAM FOR CONSTRUCTION SIGNS SEEKING PROJECTS

The NYC Department of Buildings is seeking construction companies to volunteer their projects for a pilot program that will alter the use of signs on construction fences.

The pilot program includes the removal of all current signs on the construction fence and scaffolding sheds for new buildings and alteration work.  Hanging sign will be allowed for businesses that are being covered by construction fences.

The Department of Buildings will provide a template for the only new sign to be posted on the construction fence that will provide:

  • Rendering, elevation drawing or zoning diagram of building exterior
  • Type of work in progress (Residential, Commercial etc.)
  • Anticipated completion date
  • Owner name, address and phone
  • Contact for further information
  • General Contractor name and phone for emergencies
  • BEST phone number (for major building sites)
  • 311 information (English and Spanish)
  • 1 primary permit (NB or Alt)

Other signs that will be allowed are No Smoking, OSHA Required Signage and Other Agency Permits signs.

The color of the construction fence is to be painted dark green (hunter green).  The Department is willing to consider other colors.

The Department also wants to include in the pilot program 1 viewing porthole every 25 linear feet for the public to view the inside of the construction site.  The size of each porthole will be 12” x 12”

To view a draft copy of the signs and a visual of the construction fences, click here.

The Department of Buildings is hoping to start this pilot program by May 2011.
